Karen's Fitness

Healthy diet + exercise makes me feel more energetic and productive!  I know this entry is unrelated to our normal discussion about food budget, but I thought I would share my latest discovery in group fitness classes.  Note that I would consider my fitness level to be intermediate after 2 years of gym membership (1 year w/personal trainer) while living in HK.  I want to get back into my fitness routine in NYC, but it has been challenging in the last 3 months.  However, I definitely look forward in changing that coming 2013!  I switched from 24 hour fitness gym membership ($75/month) to a new gym called Blink Gym ($20/month) this month.  I mostly intend to use to gym for running and weight training by myself.  But, I prefer group fitness classes and intend to buy these using groupon deals.

Over the last 6 months, I have discovered a new type of fitness class called the Barre Method.  I first checked out 2 classes while living in HK and loved how I felt after the class.  I love the combination of pilates, yoga and ballet moves which targeted the key problem areas for most women (e.g. abs, butt, oblique’s and triceps) When I moved to NYC, I looked up several studios which carried these classes which include the following:

·         Flywheel Sport / FlyBarre (Free trial class)
·         Pilates on Fifth
·         The Barre Method
·         Physique 57
·         Exhale Spa - Core Fusion
·         Equinox Gym

Other fitness classes I want to try:

·         Refine Method (1st class 50% off, or $16)
·         The Black box, Crossfit NYC (Free trial class)

I have only checked out Pliates on Fifth and FlyBarre so far.  I must say that Pilates on Fifth classes are better for beginners as they are slower-paced and easier.  Today’s FlyBarre class had a quick pace, great music, and the teacher was passionate.  Out of the 3 studios I have taken Barre classes so far, FlyBarre is definitely my favorite.  I can’t wait to check out the rest and share my feedback!
